PROJECT BACKGROUND

For data analysts, mastering end-to-end analytical processes is essential. This project showcases the ability to translate business questions into analytical approaches, using data to test hypotheses and effectively communicating findings. Through this analysis, GameCo can gain valuable insights into its market position, regional trends, and genre preferences, empowering informed strategic decisions.

Motivation

GameCo’s initial assumption is that its sales across geographic regions have remained steady over time. This analysis challenges that assumption, aiming to uncover patterns and trends that could influence future budgeting and marketing strategies.

Scope and Objectives
  1. Analyze Regional Sales Performance: Understand the evolution of sales across different regions.

  2. Examine Genre Trends: Identify shifts in genre popularity across markets.

  3. Evaluate Local Buyer Behavior: Understand unique purchasing patterns by region.

  4. Highlight Emerging Market Trends: Pinpoint changes that could inform GameCo’s future development efforts.

Analysis Objectives
Market Analysis

The dataset spans from 1980 to 2016, detailing game titles, platforms, release years, genres, publishers, and regional performance data. By focusing on top genres, platforms, and titles within each region, this analysis offers a deep dive into historical market trends and consumer preferences.

Challenges

  • Techniques: Data cleaning, filtering, descriptive, and prescriptive analysis.

  • Tools: Excel and PowerPoint for visualization and presentation of insights.

  • 16.5K titles

  • Information: title, platform, year, genre, publisher, region

  • Visualizations: Charts and Pivot tables

  • Data Source: GVZCharts

The data presented certain challenges, such as missing values, formatting inconsistencies, and limited information on online channels. As such, data cleaning and standardization were crucial steps to ensure accurate and actionable insights

MARKET ANALYSIS

In October 2016, GameCo’s executive board sought guidance on the 2017 marketing budget, with a working assumption that regional sales had remained stable over time. However, our analysis reveals notable shifts:

  1. North America’s Dominance: North America, the earliest active market (dating back to 1980), has generally led in sales, although EU growth surpassed NA sales by 2015.

  1. EU Market Expansion: The European market has shown steady growth and a clear trajectory of expansion, indicating a consolidated and thriving gaming landscape.

  1. Genre Preferences by Region: Action games have dominated sales across most regions, but preferences vary. In North America, action games led until 2014 when shooter games became more popular. Japan consistently favors Role-Playing Games, while the EU and other markets mirror North America’s genre evolution.

TREND PER REGIONS

Through bar charts and comparative visualizations, we assessed genre, region, and sales volume variables. These visuals clarify the regional differences in genre popularity and highlight the impact of new technologies on consumer behavior.

For example:

  • Classic Games: Prior to 2006, classics like Super Mario Bros. and Tetris maintained high sales in North America.

  • Technological Shifts: In 2006, Wii Sports introduced new control mechanics that redefined the gaming experience, leading to its status as one of the best-selling games and emphasizing the appeal of interactive, social games.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. Embrace New Technology: The success of Wii Sports underscores the value of interactive technology. Developing games that enhance player movement and immersive interaction can attract diverse audiences.

  1. Localize Content: North American consumers show a strong preference for sports titles tied to local events. Aligning releases with major events, especially in popular genres, can drive sales. Similarly, reinforcing support for expanding markets like the EU with region-specific titles will benefit growth.

  1. Increase Social Interaction: Wii Sports succeeded in part due to its appeal for social gatherings. GameCo should consider how each new title can incorporate social or online interactions, either with known friends or global players, to expand its audience.
